Welcome to CBscoop, Cherry Bombe’s first digital issue dedicated to ice cream

Share your ice cream adventures with us! #CBscoop

My ice cream obsession began when I was a little kid. I remember standing at a Baskin-Robbins scoop shop in a mall somewhere, probably New Jersey (all the good malls were in New Jersey in the ‘70s) and being mesmerized by the chain’s signature 31 flavors. How to choose! It scrambled my little brain. Back then, my favorite flavor was Pink Bubblegum, which was the color of Pepto-Bismol and studded with pieces of candy-coated gum. Amazingly, it’s still in the Baskin-Robbins’ lineup.

I’ve had countless ice cream experiences since. The astronaut “ice cream” at the Smithsonian in D.C. Fudgie the Whale ice cream cake from Carvel. A Chipwich phase. Butterscotch sundaes at Friendly’s with my grandmother. My college love affair with pints of Ben & Jerry’s Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. The watermelon-juice-and-vanilla-ice-cream shake at the The Juice Bar in Nantucket (don’t knock it till you try it). Berthillon vanilla ice cream enjoyed on the banks of the Seine in Paris. Pints of Jeni’s Brambleberry Crisp. The luxurious soft serve with white truffles from Chef Missy Robbins at Lilia in Williamsburg. Waiting on line at the Original Chinatown Ice Cream Factory for a scoop of Almond Cookie and a scoop of Ginger. Finally trying Portland’s cult fave Salt & Straw. Watching instant ice cream made with liquid nitrogen at Smitten in San Francisco. Walking into Rococo in Kennebunkport as they were making the most fragrant batch of strawberry and basil ice cream. MilkMade moving into my Brooklyn neighborhood with their superlative product. And Jacqueline Dole from The Parlor Ice Cream Co. sneaking her blue butterfly flower flavor into a restaurant for me to try.

And then there are the ice creams I haven’t tasted yet, but can’t wait to. Frankie & Jo’s vegan ice cream in Seattle. The blue and green vegan Earth ice cream at Van Leeuwen. The cherry blossom ice cream from Wanderlust Creamery in Los Angeles. Gati’s Thai-inspired coconut-milk ice cream in Austin. The Taylor Ham + French Toast flavor from Windy Brow Farms in Newton, New Jersey. The Nashville Hot Chicken flavor from Hattie Jane's Creamery in Tennessee. And on and on. Thanks to Instagram, my ice cream FOMO is for real.

There’s no doubt ice cream is the dessert of choice for the Bombesquad too. When we asked for your favorite flavors and scoop shops, you were quick to nominate the brands and the makers you love. Thanks for introducing us to some people and places we had never heard of.

Over the next week, we’ll be celebrating all things ice cream, with an emphasis on the most interesting female makers around, from the reigning Queen of Ice Cream, Jeni Britton Bauer, to the up-and-comers, like Hannah Spiegelman of A Sweet History. Stop by each day for profiles, recipes, fun ice cream merch, and more. And keep an eye on Instagram because we’ll have lots of delicious content there as well. Speaking of which, be sure to tag #CBscoop during your ice cream adventures so we can see what you’re up to.

At the end of #CBscoop week, we’ll be sharing the ultimate list of female-fueled scoop shops across the U.S. If you have one to nominate, DM us on Instagram and let us know. Our ice cream list will be your map to the coolest road trip ever.

All the best,

Kerry
