Emily & Melissa Elsen
CHERRY BOMBE 100:
Melissa and Emily, the Four & Twenty Blackbirds founders, come from a long line of pie lovers. They were born and raised in the rural farm town of Hecla, South Dakota, where their mother and her sisters owned the popular Calico Kitchen restaurant for which their Grandmother Liz made all the pies. The sisters originally custom-baked pies in their Brooklyn apartment before opening their flagship Four & Twenty Blackbirds pie and coffee shop in 2010 in Gowanus, Brooklyn. Four & Twenty has expanded to include a cafe in the Brooklyn Public Library, a production kitchen, a seasonal storefront shop in the North Fork of Long Island, and most recently, a 10-seat pie counter that offers wine, locally brewed beer, and baked treats. Emily and Melissa’s first book of pie recipes was released in October of 2013 and has been translated into French and Swedish.
