CHERRY BOMBE 100:
A longtime fashion editor turned proprietor of Westwind Orchard, Laura Ferrara personifies the strong cross-pollination between food and fashion. Born in Campania, Italy, and raised in Brooklyn, Laura was part of a family that had vegetables, grapes, figs, and chickens in their backyards and made wine in their cellars. She started her career at Harper’s Bazaar in 1992, and followed that with stints at Jane, Flair, Marie Claire, and Glamour. In 2002, she and her husband, fashion photographer Fabio Chizzola, bought a dormant farm—with an 18th-century stone house, a barn, and 33 acres of apple trees—in Accord, New York. It took six years of hard work for Laura and Fabio to coax the trees into bearing fruit again and to get the farm certified organic, adding more crops and a celebrated cider to the mix in the decade since. Proof that fashion and food really are apples to apples.
