CHERRY BOMBE 100:
Mashama Bailey is executive chef of The Grey in Savannah. Born in the Bronx and raised in Queens, Mashama learned to cook from the women in her family. Her grandmothers, aunts, and mother gave her the best kind of education, she says: a real world one. Mashama attended ICE culinary school to round out her education and continued her studies in France. She spent a dozen years cooking throughout New York City, the last four of which were at Prune on Manhattan’s Lower East Side under the tutelage of her friend and mentor, Gabrielle Hamilton. As executive chef of The Grey, Mashama has earned a number of accolades, including a finalist nomination from the James Beard Foundation for Best Chef Southeast in 2018. She also serves as vice chairman of the board of the Edna Lewis Foundation, which works to preserve and celebrate Edna’s legacy. Mashama surrounds herself with family, friends, and food, and she is a firm believer in the old adage that you learn something new every day.
