Naomi Starkman is editor in chief and founder of Civil Eats, the daily news source for critical thought about the American food system. She and her team of journalists cover everything from farm bills to pesticides to school lunch programs, and they report the stories largely ignored by the mainstream food media. Naomi and the team received the James Beard Foundation's 2014 Publication of the Year Award for their efforts. Naomi was a 2015-16 John S. Knight Journalism Fellow at Stanford and she has worked as a media consultant to Newsweek, The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, GQ, WIRED, and Consumer Reports magazines. After graduating from law school, she served as the deputy executive director of the City of San Francisco’s Ethics Commission. Naomi is an avid organic gardener, having worked on several farms.
