Marcie Turney & Valerie Safran
CHERRY BOMBE 100:
Chef Marcie Turney and restaurateur Valerie Safran are so modest, it took them 15 years to name their restaurant and retail group after themselves. Earlier this year, they christened their bustling Philadelphia-based organization Safran Turney Hospitality and announced ambitious expansion plans. Together, they operate five restaurants (Lolita, Jamonera, Barbuzzo, Bud & Marilyn’s, and Little Nonna’s), a gourmet food shop, an artisanal chocolate line, two lifestyle boutiques, and an online novelty shop. It all began when they took a chance and opened their retail space Open House in the middle of the city’s red light district. Next, they opened their restaurant Lolita on the same block and today they are two of the city’s most respected business people. The secret to their success? “We chose to do it with our own money,” Marcie told Philadelphia Magazine.
