Rochelle Oliver is a journalist who decided to embark on covering Caribbean cuisine after a feature she wrote about Jamaican beef patties for The New York Times went viral on Twitter. The social tug-of-war between food and identity led her to develop IslandandSpice.com, a site expected to launch this summer, where both chefs and consumers can learn about the flavors that make island food (and culture) so unique.
Rochelle’s first foray into food began more than a decade ago. She previously worked as a dining editor for Tronc (then known as Tribune) in South Florida, where she lived for 13 years. Her career has taken her to the Miami Herald, Sun Sentinel, and most recently to The New York Times where she served as a breaking news editor. Today, Rochelle splits her time between New York City and New Orleans.
