Director of Vineyard Operations at St. Supéry

Brenae Royal grew up in California’s Central Valley around a family of teachers and doctors. Early on, she had a passion for farming, first the enjoyment of gardening with her grandmother and later, joining and becoming an officer in the Future Farmers of America when she was still in high school. The program took her all over California and immersed her in a world she knew was her calling. Brenae studied Crops and Horticulture Science at California State University, Chico and during her senior year, after developing a passion for bold red wines, decided to pursue a career in viticulture.

She joined E. & J. Gallo Winery in 2013 as an Operations and Viticulture Intern, following in quick succession as a Viticulture Technician, and eventually being named Vineyard Manager in 2015 at the famed Monte Rosso Vineyard in Sonoma Valley, home to some of the oldest producing grape vines in California. “The vines taught me so much during my time there. My ultimate goal was always to preserve what is special about that vineyard so that it will be producing for another 100 years,” noted Brenae.

Following 11 fruitful years at Monte Rosso Vineyard, Brenae joined St. Supéry Estate Vineyards & Winery as Director of Vineyard Operations in the spring of 2024, assuming overall responsibility for the acclaimed Napa Valley winery’s three Napa Valley vineyard locations. Totaling 1639 acres, with 577 developed, all of St. Supéry’s land is certified Napa Green. “I’m looking forward to building a strong team to gently care for the old vine Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc at Dollarhide and further enhance the younger blocks at all three estate locations,” said Brenae.

Brenae brings extensive vineyard operations experience to St. Supéry. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture with a focus on Crops, Horticulture and Land Resource Management from California State University at Chico. She also has experience in irrigation automation, sustainable and organic farming, and is a Pest Control Advisor. A Wine Enthusiast 40 Under 40 Tastemaker in 2020, Brenae is an advocate for improving involvement and advancement of Black people in agriculture and winemaking serving as a mentor for Wine Unify and the Roots Fund.
