Celebrated authors Claudia Roden, Joan Nathan, and Lidia Bastianich discuss their work and experience with the incomparable Judith Jones, the editor who championed Mastering the Art of French Cooking. Also joining the conversation is Edna Lewis’ niece and Edna Lewis Foundation Board Member Nina Williams-Mbengue. The conversation will be moderated by Sara B. Franklin, author and authority on the life and work of Judith Jones, and introduced by entrepreneur and baking enthusiast Abena Anim-Somuah.

Sara B. Franklin | Moderator

Sara B. Franklin is a writer, professor of food studies and oral history at NYU, and twin mama. She is currently at work on a narrative portrait of the late, legendary Knopf editor, Judith Jones. She writes, cooks, grows food, teaches, and tries to keep up with her kids and dogs in Kingston, NY.

Lidia MATTICCHIO Bastianich

Lidia Matticchio Bastianich is the author of 15 cookbooks and the Emmy Award-winning host of public television's Lidia's Kitchen, which also airs internationally. She is also a judge on Junior MasterChef Italy and Italy's highly rated daily program La Prova del Cuoco. Lidia owns Felidia, Becco, and several other restaurants, and is a partner in the acclaimed Eataly.

Joan Nathan

Joan Nathan is a frequent contributor to The New York Times and other publications. She is the author of 11 cookbooks, including Jewish Cooking in America and The New American Cooking, both of which won both James Beard Awards and IACP Awards, and her most recent cookbook, King Solomon’s Table. Her PBS television series, Jewish Cooking in America with Joan Nathan, was nominated for the James Beard Award for Best National Television Food Show.

Nina Williams-Mbengue

Nina Williams-Mbengue is the daughter of Edna Lewis’s younger sister Naomi. At the age of 12, she lived with her mother and Miss Lewis in New York City and subsequently typed the manuscript for A Taste of Country Cooking, Miss Lewis’s seminal cookbook based on her childhood.

​A graduate of the University of Virginia, she holds a BA in Latin American studies and has worked as a grant writer with Care International, as a Resource Assistant with American Humane Association, and with the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) as a Program Director and Senior Fellow. She recently retired from NCSL’s Child Welfare Project where, for nearly 25 years, she conducted legislative research and policy analysis on child welfare issues, and also provided and developed technical assistance programs, educational sessions, national legislative meetings, publications, research, and testimony. Nina is currently providing policy consultation on child welfare.

Claudia Roden

Claudia Roden was born in Egypt and lives in London. Nearly all of her many books were published by Knopf in the US; The Food of Spain was published by Ecco/Harper Collins. Judith Jones edited The Book of Jewish Food, which won eight international awards including the James Beard Best Cookbook of the Year in 1997. In 2010, her The Book of Middle Eastern Food was inducted in the James Beard Hall of fame for the influence it has had on food in the USA.
