Asmeret Berhe-Lumax
presented by North America’s 50 Best Restaurants
Asmeret Berhe-Lumax didn’t set out to become a food justice hero, but when she saw a need, she filled it, fridge by fridge. After two decades in fashion and supply chain management, Asmeret launched One Love Community Fridge (OLCF), a grassroots mutual aid movement tackling food insecurity head-on. Since 2020, OLCF has rescued over seven million pounds of food and served up nearly a million meals in 2024 alone—all powered by community, collaboration, and care.
Asmeret’s journey—from her East African roots and upbringing in Sweden to a successful career in finance and fashion (including co-founding Blush)—fuels her commitment to social justice. Recognized as a UN Women Champion of Change, Asmeret is also a devoted mother and accomplished endurance athlete, passionately driving positive change in her Brooklyn community and beyond.
In July 2025, Asmeret was the recipient of North America’s 50 Best Restaurants’ inaugural Champions for Change Award. This award recognizes and celebrates unsung heroes of the hospitality sector who are driving positive action in their communities and creating blueprints for a more inclusive society.
As the Champions of Change Award winner, Asmeret will receive a financial donation from the 50 Best organization, enabling One Love to continue their work and contribute to long-term progress in the food space.
“I am deeply honored and incredibly grateful for this recognition and grant. This support not only amplifies the reach and impact but will also serve as a powerful inspiration for others to join in and contribute. This award is a testament to what’s possible when a community comes together. One Love Community Fridge embodies the power of food to nourish, to unite us, and to promote health, healing and collective care rooted in dignity. Small, consistent actions can lead to big, meaningful change,” Asmeret said.
